I would guess their intent was to get jet fuel all over the optical sensors to make them useless, rather than crashing into it to knock it down. It was pretty obviously not a well thought out plan, starting from the fact they didn't seem to consider the whole thing would be recorded and released on the internet. It is like the stupid things drunk people do at night right in front of a CCTV camera.
