I don't know if this will be of interest to you guys here, however I have recently discovered a podcast called F1: Beyond The Grid.

I find it really interesting - Tom Clarkson seems to get some good info out of these guys.

So far I have listened to interviews with:

Lewis Hamilton
Martin Brundle
Christian Horner
Mark Webber
Robert Kubica
Esteban Ocon

All really interesting interviews and I have learned something new from each one so far. For example (as I have just finished listening to it!), Ocon's parents sold their house and moved into a van + caravan to allow him to pursue karting for 3 years. Incredible dedication to their chosen sport.

He does seem to have the ability to get the interviewees trust, to open up a bit and give some interesting conversation. Fair play to F1 for doing this in a time when all anyone seems to want to do it criticise anything and everything they do - podcasting is a huge thing now, and you just know the troll would have gone "Podcasting for fans? Spend money without instant profit payback? Are you stupid?"

One thing someone needs to tell him though, I don't know if he thinks a little colour is a good thing but a little less background noise would be great, it just makes it more fatiging to listen to, particularly given most listeners will be either listening to a foreign voice and/or a 2nd/3rd language for driver and/or listener!

Other than that minor complaint great job.

I agree about the background noise, however I get the impression that he takes any opportunity to do the interview as opposed to being perfect. In some ways it probably ends up with a better outcome as the interviewees are more relaxed in the environment of, say, their team motor home than a studio.

I don’t know who’s idea it was, but assume it’s Bose who are funding it?

I've listened to the Hamilton interview, I found it interesting & refreshing to hear a small insight into his life beyond the usual boring F1 talk. Even the confused dog jizz!

Great job by Tom, looking forward to the rest.

Also, does anybody know much about Tom Clarkson?
Is he a Beeb man through and through or some other F1 related background?

Judging from other comments, he's managed to have a right ol' chin-wag with a few names - is he simply the Louis Theroux of the F1 World!?!

Wasn't he a teacher in Waterloo Road? smile

When I used to listen to 5Live, I always enjoyed Tom's input. Not listened to those podcasts but will give them a go. Thanks for bringimg them to.my attention.

I've only recently started to listen to podcasts and I'm finding Beyond The Grid a really enjoyable series. I enjoy listening to people talk about things they are genuinely passionate about, and I think Tom does a good job as host.

Was really nice to hear him speaking without hyperbole for once; he has a much more interesting background than I realised.

His autobiography is well worth a read if you get the chance. Ome thing is never heard about until I read it was him offering Senna a drive at Jordan in F1, as EJ knew he couldn’t afford to lay Senna the wages he would expect he actually offered him a stake in the team that would more than cover the extra money purely because he knew the value would go up and more sponsors would come in as a result.

Given the Jordan generally was a decent car with a usually crappy engine in it for the first few years especially, a Jordan with Senna in it and a decent engine could’ve been a very different history of F1 to what we have now

I'm not sure about the ending of the Brundle podcast.

I think TC is a good interviewer. He rarely asks closed questions and invites the subject to give more detail and information. I haven't listened to all yet. The EJ one is better that I thought it would be and fair play to him, he made a lot of money taking risks.

Haven't heard the EJ one yet but will do this weekend.

Overall great podcast series with great interviews.

Berger one was weak IMO, pretty much bog standard Berger questions that's been asked millions of times. Only thing illuminating was about his last year in F1.

Was it just me but Hamilton came across as superficial to some extent as if he seemed desperate to dispel the bling character usually up on his social media? BTW I'm not a Hamilton hater - I absolutely adore him driving a car on the limit.

I have to say, I think he is a really good interviewer. What I like is he asks the question and actually lets the other guy answer it. Seems like a rare quality in an interviewer these days!

I didn't know about Berger's road car accident.

The EJ interview made me laugh for that reason. TC asked him if he could name the private investor who had wrangled him some money in nefarious circumstances. EJ said he couldn't name him. TC let that sit, and within 0.2 seconds EJ had blurted out the guy's full name, address, date of birth and national insurance number hehe

I was familiar with it but admittedly it doesn't make the top half of Gerhard Berger FAQs.

EJ was excellent. At least one exclusive info on there. It sets a very high standard.
