Wasn't there a news article the other day stating that 20mph limits are unenforceable [it was only a fleeting glance, so maybe not....?]

Doubt you can go more than 20mph on many of the roads in London anyway.

Bristol's had majority of roads at 20mph for years now. Don't think it's turned it into any more or less of a dump than what it was before but it does make it more pleasant when walking and cycling around.

I really like the 20mph limits in Scotland - and feel that the majority of drivers have slowed down (albeit not down to the 20mph), benefitting us all with safer, healthier and more sustainable lives.

For those looking to maintain 30mph, what makes you think that is an appropriate speed in a built up area?

20mph round a school at 3pm is completely reasonable.

20mph at 2am on a 6-lane carriageway is pure evil.

It's all around me. Bit annoying when I'm driving at 1am and the only person on the road apart from the maniac behind me who was doing 40mph and has rapidly caught up with me but would now rather tailgate me than overtake. confused

If you dare do 20 you'll have a bus right up your jacksie, cycling is shocking with the hills, impatient drivers, and fake, cheap cycle lanes created at the lowest possible cost. So no, Bristol is not more pleasant at all, it's a massively overpriced student bedsit with an idiot of a Mayor who has been voted out yet remains to pocket the cash (with his other 5 jobs), but it is well balanced. It has a chip on both shoulders.

Another one of Sadiq's money-making power trips - nothing else.

He has to do something to recoup the £1.1 million of taxpayers' money he's just spent on basketball coaching (yes, really).

I speak as someone who was flashed the other day on an empty Vauxhall Bridge Road at 3am, with the criminal inclination to do 27 in a 20 according to my dashcam (it was a 30 until very recently, and yes I lost concentration, and yes I should have been more careful).

Promising footballers will do 70+ down my 20mph residential street with a primary school because there are no cameras, no speed bumps and the police don't give a stuff when you raise it with them.

Horrendous traffic, ULEZ, blanket 20mph speed limits, huge increase knife crime and theft, hideously expensive house prices, shall I go on?

Having an office in Bristol and commuting by car from the Chew Valley, that is a very accurate description ! thumbup

What's with the 20MPH on 65KM of roads within London.

Either 32kmh on 65km, or 20mph on 39 miles.

Come on Evening Standard, make your mind up!

I really dislike the 20mph limits in Scotland. Means I am consistently breaking the law even whilst driving at a reasonable speed for the conditions (say, 25mph on slightly more open, well-sighted stretches of city road with no pedestrians around). I think a 30mph MAXIMUM is appropriate in a city, where some tight stretches require 20mph or less, and in others 30mph is fine. I find 20mph too slow for all but busy high streets or places with a lot of pedestrians and cyclists. To turn your question around, what makes you think a 20mph MAXIMUM is appropriate across a huge area like Edinburgh (a few clogged arterial routes aside)?

I get that they have been shown to reduce average speeds by a few mph, but at the cost of bringing all limits into disrepute (or more into disrepute).

The ship has sailed, though. They are here to stay and likely to proliferate. It just means that the majority of people break them, and they aren't really enforced, leading to a sort of anarchy on the roads.

I think you missed the irony in my post; it's always been carpy...the carp just evolves into a new form of carp.

Vision Zero - How dare London and other cities have such a goal for the future, right?

"2041 no one will be killed or seriously injured on the capital’s road"

After all, our villages, towns and cities should continue to be prioritised for the needs of drivers over everyone else, right?

I don't know about other places in the UK, but the sheer amount of moped drivers these days riding like lunatics in London make driving in urban areas really hazardous.

They should all be limited to 20mph and monitored with black boxes for risky behaviour.
