I'm genuinely not trying to unnecessarily continue the argument, I thought that an episode with a really obvious trans rights analogy from 30 years ago was of interest to the discussion. If the idea is that the modern shows are more heavy handed, I'd disagree.

Damn, and it seems I cannot watch this until tomorrow, not on Paramount+ yet.

Picard is set in the early 25th century so the least you could do is drag yourself into the 21st century. wink

It isn't just fan service though - it is proper use of the canon!

I honestly cannot get over how good this is, and I can see now why the reviewers who got advanced screenings were so positive about it. Not just that it is an exciting story but that Matalas and co. are clearly good writers and have been able to save a series that practically everyone had written-off without having to completely reboot and start again.

For example using one of the cringe plot points of series 1, the synthetic bodies, to bring back beloved character Data in a credible way that is both consistent with the canon and avoids the appalling attempt at de-aging applied to Brent Spiner in series 1. It is like Matalas said "well, were stuck with this stupid idea, so rather than kind of pretend it never happened because it is inconvenient for pointless dramatic moments like the series 2 writers did, let's embrace it and use it fully to our advantage".

I also like that Matalas has written this so that you can watch (the not great but not completely terrible) series 1, completely avoid (the total dogst) series 2 and still get what is going on here.

I have to say I thought it was a bit overdone.

I love a sprinkling of Easter eggs, but when you need to pause the TV every 5 seconds so you don’t miss something…..

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still loving it, but that episode went a bit too far down the memberberries route.

I have to admit when they told them that the Titan was itself a beacon I thought they were all going to decamp onto the Defiant or that a restored Enterprise D was in the dock having new carpets fitted.

I wonder what’s in the shuttlebay that Geordies other daughter briefly mentioned as an option.

Not sure exactly what “the weapon” is going to accomplish either.

Looking forward to next week.

I am willing to forgive it. As I said - Matalas had a lot of heavy-lifting to do to reconnect with the fans who had rightly written-off Picard/STNG as just another IP being employed as a trojan horse for woke activists to crassly deliver their ticky-box messages.

Oh, and before Zedleg chips in again - I totally agreed with his point that woke isn't the same as progressive, and Star Trek was indeed a pioneer of exploring progressive topics in an intellectual way.

Here we go. rolleyes

I knew it would trigger you. Suffice to say I am aware of your political stance from our encounters in the 'Scottish politics' thread and I know you are not impartial on the matter.

Let's try and keep this thread on-topic. smile

That's it, I was just laughing at you misusing the word in a comment where you said you agreed with me about misusing the word.

One thing that's interesting to see is how many of the plot points are scattered through the displays on the end credits.

Obviously still a few more left, which will make zero sense up to the point they appear in an episode.

I was avoiding commenting on how you later destroyed your point by trying to equate being progressive with woke activism (in a rubbish attempt to erase the negative connotation that has formed around the term), but you've now kind of forced me into it. Woke implies awareness, yet delivering progressive messages in a crass, forced and 1-dimensional way turns people off, which is why woke activism generally fails in its intentions, especially when it is prioritised over entertainment in something that is supposed to be entertaining.

As I said - Start Trek was historically a pioneer in tacking socially controversial issues in an intelligent yet accessible manner, taking full advantage of being set in the future and exploiting the implication that society had 'progressed'.

Let's agree to leave it at that.

Woke is very specifically about awareness of systemic racial inequality in the US. It's not a general term.

People misusing it diminishes that meaning, which is of course the point for all the grifters banging on about "woke ideology".

Anyway, I'll save any further comments until the series is finished and I've watched it.

Indeed. We now have an explanation for the musical score.

Once again the genius of Matalas - a complete yet (almost) spoiler-free series synopsis at the end of each episode.

Hence the pointless and crassly handled immigration storyline shoe-horned into Picard season 2.
