Never put your finger somewhere you wouldn't put your dick.

Undoubtedly saved a digit or two when I've been working on machinery/cars/whatever.

I like these two from star trek

The Ferengi Rules of Aquisition
9. Opportunity plus instinct equals profit.
and
59. Free advice is seldom cheap.

In honour of todays possible BoJo shenanigans.

Let your word be 'Yes, Yes' or 'No, No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one.

We have two safety briefings for new starters where I work, the first is the sit down with lots of paperwork and the second is me telling them what you just posted.

We had a young girl start a while back so I told her not to stick her fingers were it would be unwise for a bloke to stick a certain part of his anatomy, she got the idea hehe

Did you really say that to her? in this day in age? Id say that was pretty risky.

Only one has consistently stood out.

In the movie Under Siege, the baddies chase Steven Segal down and see him fall off the back of the train.

They report back to their baddie boss that Segal is dead. The baddie boss asks them if they saw the body, to which they reply, no, they saw him fall off, he is dead.

The baddie boss then flies off the handle and says something like, you saw nothing, assumption is the mother of all fk ups. Was totally sage advice because Segal ended up taking them all out. LOL.

Whenever I’ve assumed anything, and its come back to bite me in the ass, I always remember that scene.

I think the police are / were taught that when arriving on scene:

A - assume nothing
B - believe nobody
C - challenge everything

Yup, I also told her that the machinery we had was capable of inflicting life altering and even life ending injuries and to never hesitate to ask for advice or help.

We're based in Lincolnshire and a few weeks back I was showing her how to load tools into one of our CNC mills...

'The drawbar is powerful enough to keep hold of a 2kg tool at 7500rpm, if you get your fingers trapped they'll hear your screams in Boston, not the one down the road, the one across the Atlantic so hold the tool like so...'

She laughed but most importantly she got the point.

Two quotes from Warren Buffett:

(1)
It is crazy in my view to borrow money on securities. It’s insane to risk what you have and need for something you don’t really need… You will not be way happier if you double your net worth

(2)
My partner Charlie (Munger) says there is only three ways a smart person can go broke: liquor, ladies, and leverage. Now the truth is — the first two he just added because they started with L — it’s leverage.

Only got 1/3 on the last onesmile...........

It's a simple one but I guy I worked for was always saying 'Get it done' so whenever I was losing motivation or wanted to do something else instead I'd remind myself of that.

My personal one for life is from The Specials - Have fun, it's later than you think

Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think.

Aways liked the specials. Was sad when I read about Terry Hall's death.

I'm not quite old enough to be a proper fan, older cousins' were the records I listened to.

My mum would drop the occasional maxim into conversations.
I’m not sure they meant a huge amount to me as a child but now and again they pop in to my head.

‘Neither a borrower nor a lender be’ was one.

And true enough, I can’t think of a single situation where I’ve lent something to someone and there hasn’t needed to be an awkwardness about getting the thing back.

Oddly, if I ever have something belonging to someone else, I can’t wait to give it back to them.
My dad used to say only lend what you won't miss/can afford to lose.

Used to work with an engineer called Karl Wright, he always said "If you don't work here, you'll work somewhere else." Jobs can be the key to life satisfaction, but in the end; if you dont' work here you will always work somewhere else.

Can't forget Shakespeare: “Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.”

The key ones are from Marcus Aurelius: “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.”
“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.”

I have met such devices and now just let them go.

He also used to say there are 24 hrs in a day and you only need 8 for sleep

He was a

Mine has always been what my grandad told me "don't get mad - get even but both don't have to happen on the same day"

I took that to mean wait a while biggrin
