Actually on 2nd look perhaps the new engine might deliver more shove in the last 1000rpm which would for me be a considerable improvement over the 981. Peak power is quoted I think at 7600 (8k limit) while peak torque has stayed constant despite the capacity increase so perhaps it's been tuned to keep up higher up the rev range. That imo was the biggest issue with the previous car rather than the gearing.
so is it really a "detuned" GT3 engine with the same internals? Might it then be possible to increase the rev limit further without the engine lunching itself?

Love the looks of the Spyder. For me that's the clear choice as a road car. Again, remarkably good value. Porsche keep doing it. However, the GTS and T variants don't look quite such good buys anymore. Unless you particularly wanted turbo torque and PDK why would you?

No, I believe it is a bored out 3.0 from the carrera without the Turbo. Or at least I read that somewhere.

I would guess a remap would liberate a few bhp but more to it than that. Be interesting to see precisely how they have detuned it.

From UK Motor 1. It's loosely based on the 9A2, from the 991.2

Not sure at this stage it is enough of an upgrade to buy one. A bit disappointing was expecting it to break 4.0 to 60 etc. Handicapped by new emissions on sound and pace?

I think people have got a bit too hung up on whether it's a detuned gt3 engine or not tbh. Take the engine as it is specs wise and it doesn't really matter whether it's a bored out 9A1, bored out 9A2 or detuned gt3 tbh. Revs to 8k, peak power high 7s, peak torque maintained till 6800. that doesn't exactly suggest a sluggish engine depending on whether the quoted terms are actually reliable!

That’s true although if based on the GT engine, there might be after market options for getting the engine speed / power up ala what people did with Mezger engines in the past to “overcome” the Porsche differentiation from the GT3 spec - mid-engined GT3 effectively

It probably will once the various publications get their hands on one and test 0-60mph. Porsche tend to be very conservative in their figures.

Like others, am most interested to see if the extra torque from the 4.0 alleviates the most common 981 GT4 complaint around long gearing for road driving.

Best to forget about the drag race times for the GT4 IMO because judging it on that criteria it is slower than PDK equipped 718 GTS (4.1 sec).

Well i've just configured my spec online and its coming out at £98,429 for a clubsport car with the extras I wanted. Getting very close to 991.1 GT3 territory at that price

The reason the max torque figure at 310lb/ft is identical to the 981 GT4 and 981 Spyder is that the six speed gearbox is strictly limited by EU licence to this torque figure..Even increasing the max torque by say 2lb/ft would necessitate developing a totally new gearbox which would have been cost prohibitive..I actually like the fact that they were legally unable to increase the torque figure as it forced Porsche's hand to develop more power higher up the rev range resulting in a higher rev limit..
The lack of top end sparkle was my main gripe with the 981GT4 so fingers crossed that the new one has a much racier character..

Interestingly it just over £14K to upgrade from a Cayman 718GTS to a 718GT4..By the same measure it costs a much more reasonable £10K+ to upgrade the Boxster 718GTS to the 718 Spyder..The new Spyder is the best buy especially given its new Motorsport developed track credentials over the 981 Spyder.

Is that taken from the configurator / is it live?

Configurator is already up but you have to go through a back door in the website...go to build your own, select an 'old' model like the 718 cayman S and then when the configurator window loads go to the top left and select 718 GT4 or Spyder from the list.

there you go!
